[Harp-L] Re:Carlos Del Junco

Yes. Absolutely, go. Saw him twice last year; missed
him twice in the span of a week this year due to other
commitments. Bummer!

The first time I saw him he was the lone act so most
in attendance were probably familiar with him. Not my
jazz keyboard friend whom I brought however. He'd
never heard of Carlos but was duly impressed, both by
del Junco and the young tasty drummer who was spot on.

The guitarist (Shaun Kellerman?) is a total
madman/showman. At first I was put off by his facial
contortions and physical presentation which I thought
was too much posing. He kept it up with such ferocity
and duration however that he won me over and kept me
entertained throughout the rest of the evening. Throw
in an electric upright bass and you've got some
cookin' music.

The second show they played was part of a folk
festival. I'm sure most at this show weren't as well
aquainted with Carlos. He slayed them. I was grinning
at all the people with mouths agape who "didn't know a
harmonica could do that." I knew.

By the way, I'm also a Christian. If I recall Carlos
plays one instrumental (not written by him) that
seemed to be based on a pantheistic world view. I
could be wrong but in any case just take what you can
from it or let it pass and go see a great harp player.

A final thought. Perhaps I've been fortunate to see
Carlos because like him I'm Canadian. Not many others
seem come this way. How 'bout it Mr. Ricci,
Popparazzi, Michalek? Are border crossings that hard
these days?

Paul
