For both D and Eb dorian on one diatonic, how about an Ab harp? Play 
the D part in 7th position with a lot of bent-down notes, then the Eb 
part in second position with just one bend?

so, this makes for an interesting discussion, i think.
let's take one of the classics from that album "So
What". i'm not an expert on this, but as i understand
it the tune has an AABA structure. the A sections are
in D Dorian and the B section is a half step up, in Eb
Dorian. 

on a C chromatic, this should be a piece of cake. play
the A sections with the button out, push the button in
for the B section, and, if you want to get fancy, you
can use the button throughout to add passing tones. 

BUT... what if you want to play it on diatonic? on
just ONE diatonic? sure, grab a C harp and you've got
the A sections in D Dorian covered. but what happens
when the tune modulates up a half step to Eb? now
you're in 10th position. can YOU play the Eb Dorian
scale in 10th position? not I. just about every note
in the scale is a bend or an overbend. 

so... is there a better position to start out in than
3rd? ;)
(rephrased: is there a better harp to use than a C
harp?)
