a lot of what is happening is because you are - as you admit - not playing them much to begin with.

if you can get a hold of Mike Stevens bluegrass book he has a great tutorial showing how to play amazing Grace  from the top register for first time around then down to the lower register.

The top register uses mainly blowbends and learning to get this piece - as he does - down will help you enormously as you learn to gain control over those bends and pull back on yr "blast" - 

failing getting that book, just gently practising yr scales or blues tunes softly at the top end will teach you much more about the instrument overall - i think learning to gain control softly over the top end is the key .  - well, being able to produce clear tones gently top and bottom is going to help your overall playing enormously.
