A triplet is a decoration in which three notes replace two. The overall length of the three notes is the same as the two notes that were replaced. Another way of putting it is to say that it is a single beat in the bar divided into three equal notes. Listen to some Irish hornpipes and you'll hear triplets all over the place! They are usually marked as three tied quavers with a curved line above (or below) and the number 3 inside the curve.
