[Harp-L] Nose Flute, etc.

Okay, y'all. I just returned from a 6 week trip from Texas, to the Bean Blossom Blues Fest in Indiana, out to the North Carolina coast, and moseyed back via I-40 - and just returned Friday afternoon. Unpacked the trailer and then started checking my e-mail. Just for "fun" (what was I thinking???) I did not unsubscribe from my 4 harmonica lists. Only had 845 messages.

In reading about the nose flute I must tell all of you that I play the nose flute and take it to all my gigs. Jon Gindick says that I'm a "polite player", so when I bring out the nose flute ( I call it a nose harp since it is a reed instrument and no one is going to physically inspect it) the mood in the audience changes. I make a big deal about I'm the only one who plays this particular one, use a tissue, position my feet just right, place my left arm behind my back, close my eyes and play "Stars and Stripes Forever" in its entirety. The audience loves it and so do I.

One thing I've noticed is that my harpin' has improved. To play the "nose harp" one must have proper embochure, open the throat, stand tall, breath control, right key, timing and accompany the melody - all at the same time - and not get tickled & laugh. I can even bend notes.

I thank you, Jason R., for bringing this to our attention, otherwise I would have never shared my oddity. I thank you for entertaining at the Bean and sitting in on the harmonica classes. I sat behind you in a chair while you were sitting on the grass. I didn't get any bug bites & hope you didn't either.

A harp is a harp is a harp and they all will be around for a very long time. Only people change.

Now, back to my e-mail.

Keep on harpin'
