[Harp-L] Re: Jazz

Rhythm matters most, but that's not to say that certain notes can't really help make a song. At times there are wrong notes.

I teach 5th grade and I am teaching my class "When the Saints Go Marching In". In the course of our study, I have actually illustrated the point of rhythm being priority number one by playing the whole song at random places on the harp (using the same breathing pattern no matter what note I am on). Everybody can tell that it is still "When the Saints...". I've used this point to help relax students who are always afraid of playing the "wrong note". In a group of 21, nobody will probably notice as long as they are on beat.

However, to kind of counter that point and to continue to walk the line, I have a few kids that tend to bend the 4draw because of poor technique. No matter how on the beat they are, man does that sound AWFUL.

When I am soloing, I try really hard to focus on my rhythm over what notes I am playing, and man does that make me feel better about my playing instead of listening for notes to play.
