Re: [Harp-L] Embossing question

Bruce,

Unless I'm sorely mistaken, you emboss the reed side of the plate only. The
only purpose is to limit the amount of air that blows past the reed, so that
more air is devoted _to_ the activation of the reed, and it is possible to
play more softly, with better control, leading to longer life of the harp,
etc...

If you over-emboss, you can trim back the excess with a fine artist's
scalpel -- basically a triangular-shaped razor blade on a stick (to put it
crudely). Works best from the side opposite the reeds. I'm sure others have
found ways to "un-emboss". I'd be interested to know what others do in this
case.

As with most other things when working on a harp, you have to be gentle and
do things incrementally.

I would suspect that your golden melodies are not in fact ruined, but
restorable. Don't throw them out just yet.

Cheers,

John

> ok, I've read the entire thread, as well as everything I could find on the
web about embossing. My question is: Do you emboss BOTH sides of the reed
plate? Do you emboss the side of the reed plate where the reed is rivited?
Do you emboss the END of the reed slot? I've ruined several NEW golden
melodies, so I need help!!!!

in some reeds.
