Re: [Harp-L] Mexican harmonica music

Well, harmonica can fit really nicely with latin music.
Some virtuosos worth to be listened to (Hugo Diaz among others).
Meanwhile, I also have been surprised to hear much more harmonicas that I was used to when I was listening to Spanish Radio and also to Spanish TV. It seems that they tend more to play harmonica than we do. I do not know why, but anyway, I really appreciate it.
Gives a kindda freshness to my frog's ears.
That's also why I always enjoy listening to Damien Masterson. He is not spanish (as far as I know) but He's got that latin music on harmonica and that's great. That not really trad music but latin coloured music! Great stuff! Listen to Intercambio CD and Cubacombio CD! Both really really nice and "smiles providers"!

I'm often in situations where Spanish language radio is playing in the
background. Something I've noticed is the bounty of prominent harmonica
leads. Chromatic, diatonic, tremelo, much more common than anything on
English speaking radio. Mostly it's corridos but I've also heard it in
cumbias and conjunto. I think because of the prevalance of accordion in
these styles of music the harmonica ends up being a good fit too.
Anyone else have occasion to notice this and better yet does anyone know
who these musicians are and how to hear more of them? fjm
