One other useful tip I was given for creating "out of the box"
imrovising is to start a little late in the solo, which is to say,
don't start on note one of bar one in your twelve bars or whatever.
Leave a rest or three and then start, picking up the phrase sort of
"in progress". Then, don't be afraid to leave any number of holes in
your part. Silence from your instrument is often as useful as notes,
and kind of "frames" the licks and riffs, adding emphasis to what
you do play.
