I just heard of this guy. What does anyone here know of him? Let me
know.

Don't get around much in jazz circles, eh, Glenn?

Hendrik was born in Germany of Dutch parents and moved to Brazil for
several years, then to New York. His first CD came out about 1989 or
'90, a self-produced effort. This was followed by 4 or 5 CDs on the
jazz label Concord, in varying combinations of Brazilian and
straightahead jazz. He also recorded with guitarist Charlie Byrd,
including a live set from the Concord jazz festival. Hendrik doubles on
vibes and can be both seen and heard in the latter role in the film
Dolores Claiborne (Stephen King story, starring Kathy Bates and
Jennifer Jason Leigh). I reviewed a number of these in HIP. Since then
he has moved on from Concord and has recorded several more CDs (I've
lost track), among them one with guitarist Mundell Lowe. He was
featured at the SPAH festival one year in the mid-90s and again at the
second Harmonica Summit in Minneapolis.

Hendrik is a take-no-prisoners straightahead player with immense chops
- just listen to him rip through some Brazilian chorinhos at breakneck
speed, thens start improvising bebop on them. he has a knack for
putting together really good recording groups of imaginative,
aggressive players.
