RE: [Harp-L] Re: work Song

OK
*1st off-- Butterfield was a great musician!

*old news:
the missing note is an essential part of the melody (IMO) it it a contrast with the Eb heard constantly thoughout the tune. PB could have played it in 3rd in the first octave-no problem.

*related -has anyone ever heard Sammy Davis Jr. sing Work Song with the Count Basie Orchestra? What a riot!

*now for my real work song feelings-
Butter's greatness asisde, I feel that Work Song was a subpar performance for Paul & the entire band, wrong note in the melody or not! Groove is weird and weak and the improvising is just off to my ears. I bet I have way more nights like that than Paul ever did though.
Another travesty of this lame groove (IMO) is that countless harp players have walked up to me and played their take on PB's take and failed miserably. I have heard very few players come close at all to the melody of this tune. I am talking about all of the other notes & rhythms besides the E natural!l

THERE, I SAID IT--I FEEL BETTER!

I don't understand why people get all "worked" up about Butter changing a note or two in "Work
Song." Charlie Musselwhite took much greater liberties with Donald Byrd's "Christo Redentor" but
you don't hear anyone complaining about that. (Except me! ;>)
