RE: [Harp-L] Hippest Musician's Towns

Chicago, St. Louis, Memphis, Nashville, Jacksonville, Orlando, Charlotte, Richmond, D.C.

All good spots with lots of music and lots of listeners and lots of places to play. D.C. and Chicago both are real expensive to live in, but if you play Kingston Mines, Checkerboard, Buddy Guys, The Back Door Room, Blues, The Shack and any other number of joints in Chicago I know you can get by. D.C. isn't to dissimilar.

You can even play the Subways in most major cities on an off day and make 50-200 bucks a day... I played once in front of the Water Tower in chicago on this Flute player's rig... he had a bucket for money and was taking a break so I played a couple tunes and let him keep the money... he must have doing pretty well... he had three friends watching his back and apparently depending on the income. I also knew a guitar player who played the subways 5 days a week in the loop and he made at least 80/day. 400/week = 10/hour normal jobs, but tax free.

If you're good enough you can make in nearly any major metropolitan. It's all about selling yourself. I still have a day job but the other two members in my band live solely from the music income by playing 3-5 nights per week.
