Never played an M88 myself, but I do know that both Mickey Raphael and Charlie Musselwhite use 'em -- both cupped in hand (vs. on a mic stand). Mickey runs his into a tube preamp that then sends one line to the PA and another to a small tube amp (Pro Junior) that gets miked. Never met Charlie, but I believe he generally just plugs into a large tube amp. Both get pretty good sound. ;-)
