Re: [Harp-L] Butterfield

Some of Butterfield's best stuff was never commercially released. He did many extended improv. tunes with both his smaller bands and big bands.
Work Song, Driftin and Number 9 are only the tip of the iceberg. The live concert bootlegs (sans some of the stuff with Rick Danko) floating around are shear genius to the limit of not using overblows.

If PB had done no more than Driftin' and his solo on Mystery Train with The Band,he would still count as a harp great in my book. Also throw in Nutpopper#1 and his version of "Just to be with you "and ,well ,'res ipsa locquitar'.
Its kinda easy to rate his abilities against a difficulty to play level nowadays,in which case it could be argued that it wasn't the most technically complicated ,but consider trying to come up with/ compose his lines de novo.
He played harp as opposed to riffs.
Sean.
