The reason that Dylan's encore was on acoustic guitar was that the electric band had played everything that they had rehearsed during the 15 minute set. There was simply no more electric music to be performed.
 
It was the fact that he was asked back to play an encore that lead me to believe that the new electric music sound wasn't universally hated. 
 
The audience could have been booing because it was only a 15 minute set, too.
