I think you put your finger on it, Iceman. There's often a gap between sounds and feeling that can excite and please an audience - and technique that impresses players. Years ago, I used to listen to tracks with a friend who was a drums teacher..... he could only hear technique. Took me years to get back to where I could 'enjoy' music without having to analyse it first.

Might also explain why some folks aren't as successful as they think they ought to be.

Butterfield's harmonica playing leaped off those old records with high energy and excitement that was infectious - more so than the old blues guys at the time, to my ears. I didn't know much about harmonica playing in that early era, but I know what moved me.
