RE: [Harp-L] teaching kids

If you *do* use this book, be careful. The older version has some
problems, there are things that aren't on the CD due to space
constraints when they converted it from tapes or something. I got this
from Harp Depot back at Buckeye and I wish I'd have known (or they'd
told me if they knew). The newer version is in two parts, one book/cd
each. I highly recommend it and agree with Brian, it's a good way to
teach. Lots of exercises, etc.

If the kid is into blues...Jon Gindick's Rock 'n Blues Harmonica might
be fun for him too, just due to the variety of material and interesting
approach of using the cave men story (alright, lots of you think it's
gay but kids might like it and learn easier that way). Jon has a more
entertaining style so he might like that, but ultimately you will be the
guide. It has more illustrations that the kid might find useful too,
especially some stuff on music theory that makes it easier to
understand. I'd start with this and then go on to Barrett then Portnoy.
By then he'll be old enough to buy you drinks :-)

Work through one of David Barrett's books with your student.

Mel Bay's Complete Classic Chicago Blues Harp by David Barrett is a
great
book. I've trained many students with this book.
