One thing I try to get students to do is to
practice harp while walking. Get yourself walking
at a good steady pace (not too fast) and play harp
using your own gait as your metronome. You can play
on the "beat" of your footsteps, or off the beat,
ahead of the beat, just behind the beat, etc. Work
it!

If you can get your harp playing "in tune" with
your body's natural rhythms (walking) then you will
start to get a sense of fitting it with music more
naturally. Your harp rhythms becomes more a part of
who you already are

Nice touch Ken,
And a brilliantly intuitive real-world teaching technique...the walking
thang is also a great way of jogging(yeah I know...) the creative juices, either
for breaking up a songwriting block or just casting for some "new" new licks.
Some kind of therapeutic infusion of endorphins, rhythm, fresh air etc...
I used to come up with great songs while bike-riding, though more often than
not losing the thread by the time I got home. (Tried carrying a pad and pen,
but I got confused juggling them with the harp, cellphone, chicken wings and
Heiniken....)

See you (and Mssr Ricci) at Lincoln's on the 8th.....
