I have a unit made by Digitech, called the Vocalist Performer,
which in my opinion is superior to a pitch-shifter or octaver.
It's made obviously for singers, but works with any instrument 
played through it.  It's capable of adding 2 harmonies at a 
time to a live performance.  First you select the song key, 
and then you can choose from among 2 high harmonies, a unison, 
and 2 low harmonies.   True harmony is not just an equal 
pitch-shift on every note, and the Vocalist has a choice of 
3 slightly different types of major harmonies and 3 minor 
harmonies, which can be selected based on the chord progression.
You can program 2 different harmony setups as A and B, and 
foot-switch between them within a song. You can also foot-switch
the harmonies on and off.  I use it to add harmony vocals, when 
I'm jamming with friends who don't sing.  There is also a rack
unit that has greater capabilities.  Check out the website:
