[Harp-L] re: was Howard Levy's style now Pig Pen

Pig Pen was a great harp player. He played standard 2nd position blues scale. The
blues scale being 1, 3b 4, 5b 5 7b and sometimes the 1b as well (in C--C Eb F G
Bb Cb [or B] C). Pig Pen usually played a few riffs, let the band jam
endlessly, then he'd come back with a few riffs. For improvisational harp I'd
recommend Paul Butterfield especially the song East West, and the Blues
Travellers with John Popper on harp.

For modes-try major pentatonic scale (in C--C D E F and G). A lot of Allman
Brothers and old Grateful Dead use this (they often throw in the flatted 7th
making it the Mixolodian mode). It's easy to play this in 2nd position,
especially if you start on hole 4. (4D 5B 6B 7D 8D 8B)Also the Doors and a lot
of the psychedelic bands used to jam on Dorian mode (in C--C D Eb F G A Bb C)
This lays out nice in third position. There's lots of info on the web about 3rd
postion.
