[Harp-L] Re : amp and speakers

Larry asked :

" I have been considering building my speaker cab using webers spkrs and a '65 Bassman but I keep seeing these '59 Fender re-issues for sale. I don't ever expect to play in anything but small stuff and don't know if I am going for over kill or not. I can get a re-issue for less than I can put something togeather myself although I could do a pretty nice job on one. Would I get a lot better sound doing this myself or should I just pop for the re-issue? Nothing but blues here.

Hurricane Sez :

The biggest myth in audio seems to revolve around speaker cabinets , the stories go on and on , but lets clear the air .

Larry :

You sure can build one great speaker cabinet as good or better is the answer plane and simple .

What is needed is the skill to operate ( and have access to ) a small table saw with a jig attachment for the box joint at the most of your expenses for equipment needed , throw in a few screw drivers and soldering iron and a few misc pliers . With a good table saw ( or router & template jig if your a serious hitter here with hardware gear ) you can make those " Box " joints just like all the vintage speaker cabinets have by buying a " How to " book that shows cabinet & furniture making . One inch plywood and it is a done deal , or you could opt out for solid oak at Lowe's or Home Depot or any other hardware store and get all the cabinet fittings on line easily along with what ever fabric covering you want to match your Fender Bassman head .

Personally I love to make speaker cabinets , I have made copy's of Altecs , JBLs , Marantz , Infinity , and many more I can not even remember now and even a " electro stat " type too , stocking each one with the OEM innards they were made with from the manufacture :)

To be truthful it's fun . It is something the average guy can and do well with a few specs to go by and a little personal drive . You can even make your own cross ovewrs too and save a bundle .

But in the case of a Bassman cab :

We don't need no STINKING CROSS OVERS ! ! !
