It's a difference in approach to the instrument that's like George Van Epps vs. most post 1950 jazz guitarists or Bud Powell vs. almost any jazz pianist who preceded him. Both are perfectly valid. Marcus Roberts plays two handed piano that sounds very contemporary. A well rounded player should be familiar with both, but neither is "right."


The West coast is full of George Smith disciples. There are some heretics <g> like R. J. Mischo.
