Jon,
Its easy to mic a small amp on stage for a loud setting, and it works.
BUT you'll be at the mercy of the sound guy to handle your sound properly
so you get heard out front, but don't get feedback - doubly so if you want
to hear yourself through the monitors. So relying on the PA has the
potential for introducing a bunch of hassles. On the other hand it also
has the potential to make life a great deal easier for you - a good PA will
usually beat any guitar amp on stage.

Its worth learning a bit about how to set yourself up through a PA, so
you can make yourself understood by the sound guy. Even better if you have
access to the PA. Even better still if its your PA.

I know one harp pro who prefers big loud amps on stage to just mic'ing it
up because he loves the feel of the amp when he cranks it up and its
pounding through his body. He's also wary of technical stuff, he readily
admits this.

How practical is it to mic small amps like this for gigging? I have a
skylark that sounds great, but I know it wouldnt be loud enough with a
full band withing micing to the PA.

Why do people prefer using big amps on stage that don't need micing?
