Hey Ryan,

I used to gasket all my harps. I was playing cheap
Big Rivers almost exclusively at the time and
gasketing did seem to make them a little more
airtight. I don't gasket anymore.

I don't think gasketing really does that much to
help better harps, such as a good Marine Band,
Special 20, Golden Melody, Lee Oskar or Bushman
harp. They are aready fairly airtight between comb
and plate. All I do now is tweak the gaps which can
help a ~lot~ for better response just by itself.

Another downside to gasketing is the fact that (if
you're using Micropore paper tape) gunk will
accumulate in that porous paper tape material...
gunk and moisture promotes yucky germs. I just
didn't like that idea very much. Open a gasketed
harp after 6 months of use and check it out. Whew!

But to answer your question, when I was gasketing I
always gasketed the comb itself, cutting around the
tines with an Xacto blade.
