Re: [Harp-L] Advice on a First Chromatic

Actually, Huang harmonicas can be nice or hell. That's the main prob. They are cheap. I like their sound. But today you will get one which plays perfectly and tommorrow you will buy another one which is a piece of s...t! Meanwhile, I have several friends (John Broecker, Milwaukee Harmonica Club President) who bought a 1248 directly to Mr Huang. The harmonica was not so good and John told it to Mr Huang. Then Chamber Huang took back the harmonica. Then He sent two (instead of one) whith a letter to apologize. These two harmonicas are perfect: well set, well tuned...

I have few tales like this one, and it appears that Mr Huang is a really nice guy doing his best to satisfie the customer.

The main problem in hamronica business (I know a bit about it) is that the customer will not easily give his impressions. Then, many times, people will not like a harmonica and will not tell you but will say to his friends wh will talk then to thier firneds " that harmonica is crap!" without knowing anything about, not even that this can be easily fixed by a mere gapping.
How many times I have heard that Meisterklasse are not airtight, Golden Melody unresponsive, Specialo 20 not well tuned, Overdrive not working, Hering Blues too hard...!

It is actually very difficult to convince people to talk seriousely and to take them appart and ask 'em: well, sit and tell me what's the problem. They actually do not think that problem can be fixed.

That make look weird, but it is like that. I think that people who own a businness (any kindda businness) will agree with me.

I tell you that, because Mr Huang is ready to improve the quality of his product, but He needs comments! If we buy one harmonica and think in ourself " well-that-not-a-good-one I-am-not-going-to-buy-another-one" it will be useless and silly. When we get such product, we MUST send our comments to the sellers and makers. Or else, we are complices to the quality decreasement.

Two cents worth.

A bit of heresy: Huang 1248 chroms are very modestly priced, have a lovely sound,
and come in a variety of keys. This way you see if you like the instrument
before committing to something more expensive. Drawback: Mr. Huang himself told
me that there are tons of bootlegs out there. He repaired the bum harp I bought
from a Long Island dealer on eBay (where else?) who claimed to have an inventory
of 20,000 Huang instruments. Huang told me there aren't that many in existence.
The guy doesn't appear to be around eBay anymore. In any case, Mr. H. for almost
no money fixed the harp. It plays beautifully. I am not sure when I say this
but it doesn't sound like the kind of instrument you would want to use to blow
the doors off a club.

Heresy #2: Avoid the Suzuki SCX-48. Maybe I got a dog. I hope so. It's sad
because the tone is gorgeous. The pricetag is high. Even without giving it hard
use or abusing it, something caused it to lose partial sound in two holes, 1 &
2. Ppartial sound on some notes, no sound at all on others. Rupert Oysler said
he'd have to see the thing: it could be reeds, slide, windsavers, mouthpiece. I
adjusted the slide with the screw on the front: I don't think it's the slide.
For a harmonica this pricey ($115 at Harphouse) to become unplayable after a few
months...well, I've got a real problem with Suzuki chroms at the moment.

I'm putting it off. I have no idea what it costs to fix a bum chrom. I hope not
as much as what I paid for it in the first place.

I should have bought the 270. Down 'n' dirty ol' chrom which I gather is the
basis for all the other Hohner chroms with someone's name attached. Just keeps
on rollin' along....
