When I first saw my teacher Luis Robinson on stage, he was a sidemen of a
four women band called "Las Blacanblus". He stood right in the back, near
the drums, and under a texan hat. You couldn't even tell if it was him. He
didn't need to "vary the pressure" to add colour to every song he had to
play. As Iceman writes, additional effort was unnecessary in his
performance.
