RE: Crate vs. Fender

Something else to consider is one of the cheaper vintage amps such as a
Silvertone or an Airline. Many of these copied the schematics of the other
amps. Some of the cabinet work will be below the others, and maybe the
transformers won't be a beefy, but the sound might be quite good.

I have two Silvertones, a 1472 one 12" and 6v6s I use for practice and small
gigs and a recently acquired 1396 Twin Twelve with 4 6l6s that I got for
$150. This one is quite loud and sounds quite good.

Subject: Crate vs. Fender

Dear List,

Our band has started to play some larger (noisier) venues and I'm
thinking of getting something with a bit more power than my (much
loved) Premier Twin-8 (which is probably about 15 watts). There's no
way I can afford a vintage bigger Fender and even the Gibsons (GA 40s,
etc.) are getting too expensive for me. I've been thinking about trying
a "new" tube amp (probably used) and wondered if any one on the list
had any experience with the Crate Vintage Club amps in comparison to a
Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (40 watts/12 inch speaker). I found a few
scattered comments about each in the archives but no actual
comparisons. I'm playing an old mag. Green Bullet (via a Harp
Commander) and an SM 57 through the amp (with a line out to the PA).
The amp really serves as my monitor on stage since I seem to have a
chronic problem getting enough harp in the monitors once everyone else
starts the inevitable knob turning. I use the SM 57 on a stand for a
clean signal and the Bullet for the blues-y stuff. As always, thanks to
everyone for all your wisdom. I've been a regular browser for a few
years now and always learn something useful here. I just wish I knew
enough to offer more in return!

Best,
Grant Kester
