Here's an easy way to break that habit: tune the 3 blow up a wholetone.  This 
is what Brendan Power calls the Paddy Richter tuning.  It's also the lower part 
of a Melody Maker tuning.  It gives you the 2nd note in the major scale that 
you used to have to go to the 3d-- for, relieving the pressure of hitting it 
perfectly.  If you just keep popping it in there when you're improvising it 
gives your playing a nice jazzy feel.  The harp I'm carrying right now is tuned 
that way, I love it.
