Re: QUERIES RE TONGUE.

Hi Shawn,
I think what you're talking about is opening your mouth over holes 2 thru 5
with the tonguie blocking out holes 3 and 4. When used elsewhere in a
diatonic, it allows you to play an octave. If you really want to learn REAL
blues harmonica playing, the absolute BEST instructional set is one by my
friend Jerry Portnoy, who worked with Muddy Waters for 7 years and also with
Eric Clapton, and it's a 3 CD and book set called "Harmonica Master Class,"
and goes for about $60 in the US, and you'll be learning all of this stuff
from the real deal. You might not find it at your local retail music store,
but if not, go to sites like http://www.coast2coastmusic.com ,
http://www.harpdepot.com , http://www.harmonicas-direct.co.uk ,
http://www.harmonica-centre.co.uk first. If not, go to Jerry's site
http://www.harpmaster.com and it'll be the best $60 you've ever spent. There
are some good instructional sets for blues playing, but his is the hands
down best.

  Subject: QUERIES RE TONGUE.

Hello to all the Harp-l community. This is my first time posting to this
forum but may I say how interesting and informative I have found the
comments etc.
I would appreciate it if someone could advice me on 2 issues confounding
me @ present.
  1. Is a 3hole tongue split ever employed in playing. What I mean by this
is, say whilst drawing in on holes 2,3,4, block 3 to give a 2-4 split.I came
across this in a transcription of Little Walter's ahww Baby, however have
never encountered it in instruction books etc before or since. It seems quite
a tough embouchere.
2.How does Ric Estrin play the opening bar on Marions mood, off Kid
Ramos' Greasy kid album.I appreciate there is tongue work involved but cant
figure it.
  Thanks . Regards,Sean BELFASTo.
