Re: Acoustic Playing with Mic

Steve's points are well stated. I switched to a phantom powered mic
because it allows me to play off the mic at various angles and distances
to present a more dynamic range. I've got a lot to learnand each stage
and bar and concert hall is another lesson.

I have small hands so much of the big hand cup sound is byond me. Steve's
right about developing your tone off mic and learning to project forward.
Learning to power your playing from the diaphragm will allow you a great
range of throat choke and vibrato/tremelo (ok...sue me on my miuse of
these terms..).

I watched a chromatic player a couple of weeks ago in St Paul, Mn. And it
looked as if he was using some small hot-dot lavalier mic or pick up.He
had great natural tone and so the mic set up did an adequate job. But the
dynamic range was entriely too limited for my tastes and I quickly tired
of listening. My interest became more intellectual and less based in my
emotional response. Not nec. a bad thing, but I don't go to listen to
music just to take notes.

Our band followed Steve's outfit on a local artsfest stage yesterday.
As always, a pleasure to hear him play.
