Bassman RI

The reason I like the 5U4GB over the 5AR4 is the lower output of the
5U4GB. I like the sag this causes when I beat up on the outputs. Of
course this is a personal preference. I've tried the 12AT7 but It didn't
sound quite right to me. The way I deal with the feedback problem is to
cut the treble until it's barely on. About 2 or just a little bit more.
I'm liking my Bassman more than when it was new to me but the thing is a
beast. It's hard to set up and the sound changes dramaticly depending on
room acoustics. It's certainly worth the effort though. Nothing new
that I've heard recently comes close. I must admit to not having heard
Hugh's new pet the Vox clone Crate. Paper wound interleaved
transformers are available for the Bassman's from Kendrick amplifiers in
Texas. If you're ever in Austin make the trip to Pfluggerville to visit
the nice folks at Kendrick. You won't be disappointed. FJM
