Re: mikes and amplifiers

My Fellow Harp-L'ers,

I'm what's called a lurker, this being my first post. The infobahn is a
strange beast. Thanks to all of you, who so freely share your knowledge and
insight, which I shamelessly glean and absorb. Though I attempt to produce
blues with my smattering of diatonics, I don't presume to know much about
music in the technical sense; and I'm especially ignorant about electronics/
amplification. Recently, it has become necessary for me to amplify as I've
gotten myself mixed up with a bunch of x-rockers, who are jumping on the
blues wagon. Having large gaping holes in my pockets, I've had to forage
around for some equipment. Here at work, one of the technicians dug out
something called a Macintosh vacuum tube amplifier. It's quite old, but
it seems to work. My friend hooked it up to a pre-amp and a speaker and
this afternoon I'll bring in my voice mic to try it out.

My question is, does this seem like it may be a reasonable way for me to
be heard amongst the Fenders, Gibsons and drums? Actually, I'm not exactly
sure what I'm asking...type, size of speaker? Type of pre-amp? Best mic
to use? No doubt all of this depends on what I want it to sound like, and
just need to experiment. I play crossharp in the mid and lower ranges. My
favorite keys are D, A, F, G and occasionally C. Need to pick up an E. Any
comments would be much appreciated.

Thanks and thanks again.

ps- There's a blues explosion of sorts happening in my little town of
Bloomington, In. Carey Bell put on a great show a few weeks ago and Charlie
Musselwhite will be here on Thursday. In February I got to see William
Clarke up in Indy. These are happy times.
